“Housing rights, looking back, looking forward”
Urban October, along with World Habitat Day, offers us a moment to cast a spotlight on systemic injustices and to discuss and advocate for alternatives. While COVID-19 has brought systemic injustices into sharp focus, it is evident that they have existed within the social, economic, environmental and political fabric of national and global systems for decades. During the pandemic, the conversation has largely focused on diagnosis: How did we get here? What are we dealing with? Less so, has it focused on how local actors are responding to age-old battles within this new context. Whether community groups, emerging social networks, NGOs or local governments, actors are defending and producing habitat rights in ways that are novel, adjusted or deepened.
During the month of October, HIC is casting its spotlight on how HIC members, friends and allies are defending and producing habitat rights in the pandemic-defined present. Below you will find details about HIC’s Habitat Voices Campaign, an invitation to join us for a Special Event on Housing Rights and an overview of events hosted by HIC Members, Friends and Allies. It is these responses and emergent practices that challenge systemic roots of injustice and shape how we move forward into alternative ways of being and organising socially, economically, environmentally and politically.

1. #HabitatVoices Campaign
We draw your attention to HIC’s Habitat Voices Campaign and invite you to sign the Manifesto which recognises structural inequalities highlighted by COVID-19 as consequences of privatisation, speculation and dispossession under neoliberal policies and calls for concrete social, economic and political steps towards realising profound redistribution.
The Campaign is being developed in collaboration with the Coalition’s Membership, Friends and Allies. Add your voice.
2. Special Event
“Housing rights: Looking back, looking forward”
We invite you to join us for a dynamic discussion entitled Housing rights: Looking Back, Looking Forward on Friday 9 October 2020 (click here to see your local time). In this event, various communities of practice will converge to reflect on where we have come from, to look “forward” at how actors are defending and producing the ‘right to housing’ under COVID-19, and to discuss how our responses are changing / need to change in the current context.
The event is co-hosted by the Development Planning Unit (DPU, the Habitat International Coalition (HIC), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG).
Registered participants are advised that the event will be recorded with the objective of being able to disseminate it on social media networks, pamphlets, publications, press and other portals, and between UCLG members. The images and audio and video content of the webinar could be used by UCLG for promotional purposes and in compliance with the objectives referenced in its statutes without said activities implying a right to remuneration in favor of the participant.
3. Events of HIC Members, Friends and Allies
We draw your attention to the events of HIC Members, Friends and Allies. With varied calls to action, campaigns and discussions, each is about at least one of the following three aspects: Prioritising Women, Stopping Forced Evictions and Pursuing Collective Action. For HIC, these are critical dimensions of how we need to respond at this time.

HLRN New Report: A pandemic of violations

This year’s review of patterns and trends in housing and land rights violation around the world is dedicated to the theme: A Pandemic of Violations: Forced Evictions and Other Habitat-related Human Rights Violations amid COVID-19. It explores the cases of forced eviction, destruction, dispossession and privatization of housing and land of the most-vulnerable communities during a global crisis and pandemic that leaves no one behind.
