In commemoration of World Habitat Day, October 1, 2012

The United Nations has designated the first Monday
of October every year as World Habitat Day (WHD).

Every year on World Habitat Day, the Habitat International Coalition (HIC) commemorates
this day through a different perspective.

UN-Habitat’s call to “change cities, build
opportunities” on World Habitat Day 2012, is clearly inspired only by the
dominant neoliberal discourse, and alludes to the notion that cities are the ‘engines
of growth’. In contrast, HIC insists that habitat issues are above allrelated
to social justice, human dignity, and the realization of human rights,
especially the rights to housing and land. The world is currently experiencing a
new phase of the capitalist crisis, one which affects the lives of millions of
families and communities.

We invite you to visit the World Habitat Day 2012 section of the HIC
website, for information on HIC members’ activities and events, the most recent
HIC declarations and reports, as well as information on the Tribunal on
Evictions, held in Naples and Geneva in September 2012.
