HIC calls for social justice in the face of the COVID-19 crisis

In view of the current crisis situation of the CoVid-19 and the far-reaching measures announced by the States, Habitat International Coalition wishes to send a message of solidarity but also to call on Social Justice in the fight against the virus. Once again, we are facing a global challenge that must be faced from the perspective of social justice and Human Rights.

In the following weeks, many more states will implement measures that will impact all citizens. At stake is whether the measures taken rescue people rather than economic interests. In this context, we call for the recognition, defence and full implementation of the right of everyone to a secure place in which to live in peace and dignity with the following aspects:

  1. Social Justice – protection of the most vulnerable: homeless people and those living without adequate housing are a very affected group in this crisis. We call upon local and national governments and the international community to address the critical needs of people experiencing homelessness during the pandemic outbreak.
  2. Moratorium on the payment of rent. Again, the most vulnerable sectors of the population will not be able to pay the rent and for many others, this will become a major burden in a context where the economy is beginning to stagnate and income is decreasing.
  3. Moratorium on mortgage payments. The collection of debts and interest by financial institutions from individuals, families and small businesses must be stopped.
  4. Stop forced evictions. now more than ever any violations of habitat rights, often committed in the name of “development” and “improvement of the quality of life” must be stopped
  5. It’s time to call for the value of public services and commons, and to take advantage of this crisis to stop the privatization of these essential services. Now it’s time to Intervene all private health resources and put them at the service of the general interest.

HIC calls for this global health challenge to become an opportunity for social change, putting people at the centre, protecting the human rights of all people and addressing it through solidarity, justice, networking and global support.

Development Workshop Angola – Summary of the Emergency Action of Development Workshop Angola:

At this time of the COVID-19 crisis, more than half of Angola’s populations do not have access to piped potable water for consumption or basic hygiene in their homes. Many of the most vulnerable families obtain water from community standposts and wells with handpumps or have to buy water from water vendors. The maintenance of the supply of water to Angola’s most vulnerable families, living in high-density slums (where the Corona-virus could spread rapidly) is of the utmost importance. Development Workshop has promoted community water committees and trained women caretakers as water managers in key provinces across the country. At this time of the COVID-19 pandemic the role of community water managers has become pivotal, but also a high-risk activity. Development Workshop is leading an  emergency action to mitigate the transmission of the Corona-virus through the highly critical point of water-collection to Angola’s most vulnerable communities. The protection of front-line “water caretakers” is a main objective, as is the prevention of virus transmission at the water-collection point where people are obliged to meet. The action also uses the network of water committees to mount a public campaign on hygiene and anti-COVID-19 education.
