Forced evictions in Douala

The National Observatory for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ONDESC), the National Network of Inhabitants of Cameroon and the Platform for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have noted with indignation the official notifications issued by the Prefect of the department of Wouri dated 1 December 2020 and 6 January 2021. This decision obliges the occupants of airport spaces to leave the premises before 8 January 2021, with the risk of forced eviction at their expense. Despite calls for mediation and numerous complaints from victims, the eviction operation took place on Saturday 9th January 2021. Subsequently, nearly 200 families were evicted from their homes, despite the context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the organisation of the African Championship of Nations (CHAN).
