Call to the first virtual African Assembly of Inhabitants

Monday 5 October 2020

Across Africa, Covid-19 is worsening a pre-existing housing and tenure crisis in many countries. Evictions are being carried out despite moratoria in Kenya, South Africa and other countries [Ethiopia, Somalia, Nigeria].

In an effort to promote trans-continental dialogue between social movements, the Promoting Group invites you to register for the first virtual African Assembly of Inhabitants to dialogue and explore ways in which we can promote regional and transnational networks outside of western-mediated or NGO-driven spaces.

This Assembly is the result of decisions made at the Virtual World Assembly of Inhabitants on 31 July 2020 and 31 August 2020, promoted by the International Alliance of Inhabitants to encourage regional and continental assemblies to localise networking between people, social movements and activist organisations

The aims of the Assembly are:

  1. To build solidarity between social movements, activist organisations and local struggles
  2. To build internationalist solidarity at the global level to mobilise progressive forces
  3. To remind African policy makers that housing rights are human rights

When: World Habitat Day 5th October 2020 15.00 CET (13.00 GMT) (Click here for your local time) within the context of the World Zero Evictions Days
